Quatuor Modigliani Concert

About the Performance

The acclaimed French Modigliani Quartet will return to China after a 15-year hiatus to open this year's music season. The four members will perform on four Italian master violins, presenting milestone works that define the unique styles of three great composers: Beethoven, Brahms, and Ravel.

Although Beethoven's String Quartet No. 6 is classified as an early work, its profound creative spirit marks him as no longer just "Haydn's successor," but as the one-and-only Beethoven. Brahms' String Quartet No. 2, composed after he destroyed over twenty drafts, stands as a confident declaration of finally emerging from the "giant's shadow" of Beethoven, perfectly blending a rigorous classical framework with Viennese lyricism. Meanwhile, Ravel's sole string quartet, while containing elements of homage, proves his independent stature in French music through its exquisite colors and structure.

The Modigliani Quartet is hailed by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as "one of the world's top string quartets." As a French ensemble, they possess a natural cultural authority in shaping the colors of Ravel's work. Concurrently, the quartet is engaged in recording the complete Beethoven quartets, the greatest challenge of their career. Their profound study of Beethoven's oeuvre will undoubtedly guide the audience to witness a moment of awakening for a great soul.
