A Long Walk Through the Night - Solo Violin Recital by LI Lun

About the Performance

YCA International Award winner and young violinist Li Lun will present a uniquely conceived concert, with the programme designed to evoke an ‘endlessly surging’ musical experience. The continuous flow of notes, like an unceasing torrent, will guide the audience on a spiritual journey transcending time.

The programme constructs a musical crossroads with Bach as its coordinate origin. Horizontally, Li Lun explores works by Bach's contemporaries who dominated the early 18th century, whose fame then surpassed the composer's own. Yet as time passed, Bach emerged as the revered master of posterity, while their names faded into the mists of history. Li Lun juxtaposes these once-illustrious masterpieces with Bach's monumental ‘Chaconne,’ initiating a dialogue spanning three centuries.

In a vertical extension, Bach's polyphonic spirit resonates into the contemporary era: Bartók's Violin Sonatas, inspired by Menuhin's Bach interpretations, feature a ‘Chaconne’ movement modelled on Bach's form – the ultimate homage to tradition within a modern context. Philip Glass's Book of Longing and Tessa Luck's Country Rhythms, infused with American folk elements, demonstrate the infinite possibilities of the solo violin today. Li Lun will perform using the 1735 Stradivarius ‘Samazeuilh’, its sound weaving through the continuous performance, blurring the boundaries between past and present, exploring the limits and freedom within the solitary voice of the violin.
